Field Trips and Courses for 4th Quarter 2000

Western Cape

September

29 - Fri: Blinkberg, Swartruggens - This is the highest peak in the Swartruggens. It is not atlassed. Expecting Pr pendula, Pr glabra, Ve amoena and perhaps some stray Cederberg species.

October

2-6 Mon-Fri: Grootrivier & Boesmanspoort – Exploring this unatlassed range – will we get the Ld ulig/loer problem here as well? High Peaks – what else might we find.

11-14 Wed-Sat: George Flower Show. Space in the car for observers/helpers.

19 Thu: Du Toits kloof – visiting the shale hills S of the pass and Slanghoek.

21-22 Sat-Sun: Protea Identification Course - Kirstenbosch Research Centre. 08h30 for 09h00 till 16h30. Learn how easy it is to identify those Sugarbushes, Spiderbushes, Conebushes and Pincushions. Course dependent on at least 20 participants, so enroll your friends. Special rebates for those wanting to redo the course.

26-31 Thu-Tue: Oorlogskloof, Botterkloof and N Bokkeveld. Tracing the limits of the Nieuwoudtville endemics.

November

2 Thu: Elandskloof Pass – KoueBokkeveld and Citrusdal area. Checking up on species Ids.

8-9 Wed-Thu: Lainsberg hills S and E of Witteberg – Filling in the gaps between Anysberg, Witteberg and Elandsberg. Expecting Ld osbornei, Pr sulphurea and lots of range extensions (e.g. Pr convexa, Pr revoluta).

15 Wed: Paleisheuwel and Renosterhoek.

17-19 Fri-Sun: Du Toits Peak –Goudini Sneeukop Traverse – get fit if you want to come on this. Sp salsoloides and filling in gaps on the rugged areas to the north east of these peaks

21-24 Tue-Fri: Houdenbeksberg (Kouebokkeveld SE Opdieberg).

December

1-4 Fri-Mon: North N2 Koonstabel – Whitehill – exploring these unexplored hills – Pr pendula is definitely here: what other range extensions will we find?

7 Thu: Western Hex River area.

11-15 Mon-Fri: Langekloofberg - Filling in a large unatlassed area

17 Sun: East slopes Kogelberg – filling in an atlassing gap se of Kogelberg Peak above the Kogelberg Dam.

27-1 Jan Wed-Mon: Collecting flowering material of Ld loeriense and allies- GrootRivierberg, Longmore, and other areas.

The Protea Atlas Project outings will be incorporated into the Swaziland Tree Atlas outings. The dates are set for the second weekend of each month. The Tree Atlas will be using eighth-degree squares and will run for 3-4 years.

April

Wed. 12: Northern Riviersonderend Foothills. To look at Macgregor Pincushion -  Ls harpoganatum. Also to follow up on our range extensions for Gum-leaf Conebush -   Ld eucalyptifolium.

27-01 April/May: KoueBokkeveld in the Jonkershoek-Cederberg and Sneekop-Skurweberg (2071 m) and Swartruggens. Species uncertain as no one has atlassed here yet, but Gideonskop Conebush - Ld bonum is 5km to the west, Pr pendula/ Swartruggens Vexator - Ve amoena 5km to the east and Pr sscl up at the top. Opportunities for walks, flat and steep, roadside atlassing and 4X4-ing. Take your pick. Be there. Book early to secure your place.

May

05-22: Eastern Cape Road Show primarily exploring the Klein Winterhoek/Suurberg north of Kirkwood and Grahamstown areas from Alicedale to Port Alfred. Contact the office for details.

Wed 24: Napier to Bredasdorp – north and south sides. Following up some local clues and filling in distributional and seasonal gaps for Bashful Sugarbush - Pr pudens, Ld laxum, Elim Conebush - Ld elimense and Ld coriaceum.

Weekend 27-28: Protea Identification Course. Kirstenbosch Research Centre. 08h30 for 09h00 till 16h30. Learn how easy it is to identify those Sugarbushes, Spiderbushes, Conebushes and Pincushions. June

Wed 7: South slopes Riviersonderend and Donkerhoek looking at So alopecuroides and following up some queries on Needle-leaf Pincushion - Ls lineare, and other species.

Weekend 16-19: Still Bay. Atlassing 4X4 in the normally unreachable areas of Wankoe and Canca looking for Lanceleaf Sugarbush - Pr lanceolata, Mossel Bay Pincushion - Ls praecox, Broadleaf Featherbush - Au umbellata and the rare Albertinia Pincushion - Ls muirii.

Thu 22: Redelinghuys to Lambert’s Bay. To find out more about Ld brunoides flumenlupinum and obtain seasonal data for the Sandveld.

Sat. 8 or Sun. 9: Salmonsdam Nature Reserve – Tony will take walks in the area. Please book before 6 January. Of interest: Clandestine Spiderhead - Se rebeloi, Marsh Pagoda - Mi hirtus and other species in the Akkedisberg Range. Following up on some interesting queries regarding Serruria.

Wed. 19: Pringle Bay – a beginners walk to train new recruits by Val.

February

Thu. 3 Cape Point - meet at Klaasjagersberg entrance at 07h55. Bring full Atlas kit. Book at office prior to 3 February 2000.

7-21 Swaziland/KwaZulu-Natal Road Show -  Val will be recruiting in the KwaZulu-Natal area. Please join her or meet her there if you are interested. The current plan, which is subject to change, is:

11/2/2000 (Friday) - Arrive Malalotja in the afternoon.
12/2/2000 (Saturday) - Malalotja - Rangers and others.
13/2/2000 (Sunday) - Malalotja - Perhaps the day - depending on interest.
14/2/2000 (Monday and Tuesday) - Mlawula and Simunye etc. with Linda Dobson and others.
16/2/2000 (Wednesday) - Early start and drive, via Stegi, to Nhlangano Gate and to Vryheid surrounds.
17/2/2000 (Thursday and Friday) - Vryheid region ending up in Wakkerstroom.
19/2/2000 (Saturday) - Course and Hike. Mountain Club Amajuba section. Meet Reuben Heydenrych and others. 'Get Together' evening braai.
20/2/2000 (Sunday) - Morning practice atlassing session.
21/2/2000 (Monday) - Leave for Cape Town.

Wed 9: Hopefield to Redelinghuys, including the Piketberg and Aurora. Mainly to fill a major monthly gap, but also to see Redelinghuis Pincushion - Ls arenarium, Hopefield Conebush - Ld foedum / Ivory Conebush - Ld procerum and various Serruria species. If hot, we will head for altitude. Departure time 06h00.

Fri. 11: Langeberg & Naudesberg – up to the plateau looking for Cederberg Pincushion - Ls spathulatum and Droopy Conebush - Ld cordatum. Spectacular views of the Koo and Robertson valleys.

Thur. 24: Riviersonderend north side east of McGregor – to get more data on McGregor Pincushion - Ls harpoganatum and the eastern end of the mountains.

March

Wed 1: Porterville and surrounds. Filling in a quarterly gap in the Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area, specifically Visgat Conebush - Ld diemontianum, Se reflexa, confragosa, Sp tulbaghensis and Tulbagh Clusterhead - So scabridus.

Thur. 9: Hex River Valley – filling in a major blank on our maps – spectacular scenery: southernmost Green-Flower Sunbush - Ld loranthifolium and perhaps some of the endemics. Much of the area burned recently.

Wed 18-19: We will be manning the stall at the Kirstenbosch Garden Fair. Please come along and get your plants for 2000. A good selection of popular proteas will be available, as well as many of the new cultivars.

Fri-Tue 18-21: Touwsrivier. We will be concentrating on the mountains to the south and east of Touwsrivier, looking for range extensions to Ld cadens, Largeleaf Sugarbush - Pr convexa, and Laingsburg Conebush - Ld osbornei. Some easy and some hard walks – take your pick.

Wed. 29: Gansbaai - Hagelkraal to look at the limestone endemics and their interface with the sandstones. Sp ericoides and Silveredge Pincushion - Ls patersonii highlights.

20 Mar: Smuts koppie, Irene. Morning outing.. Meet at Smuts House at 08:30. No entrance fees.

2 Apr: Kromdraai Conservancy (North of Krugersdorp). One of the few remaining places in Gauteng with healthy populations of the Silver Sugarbush - Protea roupelliae.

8-9 Apr: Waterberg (Marakele National Park and/or Lapalala). To be confirmed. Volunteers needed to help give training to field rangers.

27-28 May: Wakkerstroom. KwaMandlangampisi Peak northeast of Wakkerstroom. Waterlily Sugarbush - Protea subvestita has been found here, but we are still looking for Dainty Sugarbush - Protea parvula, a tiny creeping species.

3-4 Jun: Blyderivierspoort Nature Reserve. See the rare Escarpment Pincushion - Leucospermum saxosum. To be led by the walking botanical encyclopaedia, Mervyn Lotter of the Mpumalanga Parks Board. Maximum 10 people.

16-18 Jun: Tzaneen / Wolkberg area

16-17 Jul: Mogoto Dam in the Waterberg, near Zebediela.

12-13 Aug: Botshabelo Nature Reserve, Middelburg

23-25 Sep: Paris Dam, Northern KwaZulu-Natal.
