Looking at the number of species in the southwestern Cape in more detail, we find that.

  • The Lost flora! The number of species on the Cape Flats has gone from about 20 species to 10. We have discussed these extinctions already, but it should be pointed out that many of the surviving species are almost extinct there as well!

  • The centre of rarity in the Cape Flora remains as Kogelberg.

  • However, the centre of species richness has moved from Howhoek to Villiersdorp. Before the project began Howhoek had 59 species making it the centre of protea richness inthe Cape Flora. Now, it has 68 species - a significant increase. However, Villiersdorp has 75 species -many more. This is thus the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom!

  • Although Villiersdorp is the richest grid square with 75 species, 10 of these species were not found there during the Protea Atlas Project. If we only consider species atlassed, then the richest Grid Square is Kleinmond with 67 species (Villiersdorp has 65!). We obvioulsy need to try and investigate those old herbarium records more carefully!
