And
then there were other problems.
When Ion Williams described Leucadendron loeriense
from Loerie he only saw very young plants. He grew some in his garden, but again
they were only four years old when he published his account of the genus.
Atlassers quickly realised this. However, we obtained spectacular range extensions for
this species and its close relative Ld uliginosum. Not only did David Osborne atlas
Ld uliginosum from 100km west of its known distribution, but we also atlassed Ld
loeriense in the GrootRivier Mountains north of Steytlerville and Willowmore. More
problematic was all the new populations from the Kouga Mountains. The taxonomy must still
be worked out, but preliminary observations suggest that all the specimens north of the
Langkloof are Ld loeriense, and Ld uliginosum glabratum is confined
to the Tsitsikamma Mountains. Of course, the northern populations may be sufficiently
different to form another species, but I dont think so. Still, we may be surprised! |
