Where
are these common species found?
All three occur on the arid fringes of the Cape Flora in areas that are botanically
poorly known. These thus point to a major gap in our geographical understanding of the
Flora and will certainly yield new species in other plant families once botanists explore
them properly. As can be seen, they all occur in different regions.
Ld osbornei occurs over a large area from Anysberg
Nature Reserve to north of Seweweekspoort (half our records of this species are from David
Osborne). It occurs on the Witteberg summits of the hills north of the
Anysberg-KleinSwartberg range, with a few populations on the Klein Swartberg and on
Touwsberg south of it.
Ld touwsrivierensis occurs on the south slopes and
flats on the Witteberg hills north of the N2 from Karoopoort to Tweedside.
Ld crassulaefolium occurs on the Hex and Kwadows
Mountains on the eastern side of the Hex River valley.
These three species point to the existence of an arid centre of endemism in the Cape
Flora that is poorly explored. More botanical exploration is clearly required here.
