Northern Spiderhead Sandveldspinnekopbos - Serruria fucifoliaThe Northern Spiderhead is one of the few species of Spiderhead that can be accused of forming a "tree." Most specimens are 1 to 2 metres tall, and yet they are overlooked by most hikers and flower gazers. A member of the Paw Spiderheads, which have single flowerheads on a long stalk and curved styles, the Northern Spiderhead can be identified by its delicate flowers with flat hairs on the petals and its large habit. Like most other Sandveld proteas, the Northern Spiderhead flowers for most of Spring and Summer, but curiously it appears to grow for most of the year too. This is unusual among proteas and we would welcome more seasonal data on flowering and growth for this species. The Sandveld Spiderhead Se decipiens is the other Spiderhead encountered in the Sandveld. It has flowerheads containing smaller flowerheads and flowers with a "kink" in them. |
