Range Extension for Vanstadens Conebush - Leucadendron orientale

Most of the records for Vanstadens Conebush - Leucadendron orientale have been from the vicinity of Vanstadensberg, about 35km west of Port Elizabeth.

However on several trips into the Baviaanskloof Mountains from the north, we have recorded a leucadendron which was initially misidentified as Purple-leaf - Leucadendron pubibracteolatum. Subsequent samples sent to Tony Rebelo and Jan Vlok have turned out to be Leucadendron orientale. These records represent a range extension of about 80km as the sunbird flies - which is very exciting for a species such as Leucadendron orientale which has such a restricted distribution.
