Roughleaf Conebush Skugtertolbos - Leucadendron modestumThe Roughleaf Conebush occurs on shale soils. It is a small plant and most people do not even notice it until the bush turns yellow in winter. And even then, it is rather small. And the flowers are not the most beautiful. A member of the Clay Conebushes, it - like the other members in the group - has rough leaves, and small flat seeds, that are stored on the plant waiting for a fire, and grows on shale soils. It occurs from Napier to the Breede River mouth. However, its habitat is now reduced to a few small pockets because its favoured habitat has been converted to wheat fields. However, the Roughleaf Conebush is not alone. Its plight is symptomatic of a whole group of plants which one grew on the margins of the Ruens. For them it is a flagship, a beacon of hope. By conserving our proteas we will also help to conserve a lot of other threatened animals and plants. Do your bit. Join the Protea Atlas Project today. |
